Tightly Curly Method Challenge Week 2 (6 Jan 2013-12 Jan 2013)

Freshly Shampooed after 3 months since the last…..And I used a light rinse out conditioner

The thick Conditioning “leave-in” process began :)

First day hair? Just the way I like it…tangle free :)

Because I had a curly puff on the 6th day, well, my 7th day was not as neat as the previous so I had to get creative.

*thinking cap*  ”Let me have a curly-fro for the day, yeah?”

LOOOOL I told you my hair loves being left ALONE!!! It looks so much shinier, healthier, and LESS tangles than the 7th day. I know what you are thinking, “but, Farah, your hair looks fine in the 7th pics, it’s the lightening of your camera!”

my reply: “no way!!frizzy-land is creeping in! Check my crown area in the 7th pic and check the second pic above, looks very similar to the last pic…my hair needs heavy touch ups or just redo my whole head of hair!”

I could only put it in the a curly-hawk, which looked OK, but my hair needs to be refreshed.

FEEDBACK of WEEK 2 : I LOVE TC METHOD!!!! well, for now, lets see next week?  :D

How I Refresh My “Wash And Go” (option 2)

Hi Lovelies,

So as promised, my refreshing method :D

If you have any Question, please feel free to ask :D :D

Happy Curly Evening :D

Any hair plans for 2013? Simple hair Journey…Maybe?

So have you made any Healthy Hair plans for 2013?

you feeling like your hair isn’t growing? Were you using heat all time time? Half wigs or even sew-in all the time until your front hairs are too short to be true? combing your hair too much? loads of shedding? Are you always tempted to try any hairstyle even if its not meant for you hair characteristics?  Are you really caring for your hair like you should? Is it showing that you taking good care of it? Do you have heat damage? lots of split ends?

Be brutally honest with yourself in order to know what you should be changing.

Use this opportunity to better yourself and learn from your hair mistakes you did in the past 12 months, not forgetting all the good hair-techniques that did work for you and how you should carry it over to this year and make the change…or should I say? make the COMMITMENT to stick to simplicity…something that works,

Even if it didn’t work on the same day, as long as your hair is not in total misery, try to push it a little further than just a “once off routine”, its worth the patience, you know.

As for my ladies with the TWA? Use the TWA to explore, to learn and to find the right routine, and CHILL on the hair product abuse, its not going to runaway from the shops- no need to get 25 products for one head of coils, just focus on your technique!

Lets use these 11 months ahead to better our Healthy-Simplistic-Hair-Journey; remember ladies, too much done to our kinks coils and curls does not necessarily mean best results.

As for me, I will take you on a simple hair journey, to have, Glossy, thick, healthy hair!
Ill be doing different series of Healthy DIY treatment,TC method, simple hairstyles, regimens, rollersets, simple protective styling and so much more on hair topics :D

So what have you hair-planned so far?

PS- We can all reach the same hair goal, even if we are on a low budget, simple routines, or very little is done to our hair.

Don’t forget to drink lots of water and easy healthy meals to promote healthy hair

-Good Bye 2012
—————–Hello 2013
I look forward to an awesome year with you readers!

Natural Hair Update: Simple Flat twists (protective styling)

HI subbies :D

I am slowly trying to go into protective styling again, with really low maintenance.

I co-washed my hair then blow dried using cold/cool setting.

I used almond oil only and during the week I used styling lotion or green tea to keep my hair moisturized.

I hope you enjoy the video :)

Ad’s in S.A on fro’s and curlies!!! (We Need a SeriouS Change)

Advertisement, as we all know by now, is about the client; who will the products  attract!? The only way to be sure of who you are calling towards your goodies, is BY THOROUGH RESEARCH.

Mind you, this is about natural hair products. There are 2 very important point I would like to outline before going any further.

1. There is a huge economic recession at the moment, but it doesnt mean that GOOGLING costs alot- just to have a look at your “natural hair client” of that specific country.

In fact, the BEAUTY INDUSTRY, is one industry that cannot complain about recession; we all know that we have to look great for that job interview. As you reading this article, there is a house wife somewhere in the world getting her hair permed or relaxed, her nails done, buying a new lotion or deodorant or even breast implants . So I have no sympathy for bad advertisement  especially when it doesn’t look like enough work was applied.

In few words of perfect summary- MONEY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS.

If you willing to give a one-sided advert in a mag (that’s a lot of money wasted by the way) then you have enough money to Google your clients’ hair type and make them feel a little special in your adverts.

2. If you have read my article called “chemicals knows no race” then this last point should very straight-forward analysis for you.

A consumer does not really know the “behind-the-scene truth” of beauty chemicals because all they want is an advert is appealing to them and the product that quickly consults them(the writing on the containers). They do not know anything further!

With this point, I want to give you a very simple Ad I downloaded from Google images. This is a dove lotion ad (tv and mag’s)

Take a good look at the following images, what do you see?

Let me tell you what I see:

2.a. This company wants the return of EVERY PENNY that they’ve put in this ad, and I am very sure they are enjoying their hardwork that they have put in this advert.

2.b. These are not the only skin tone in the world not to mention in South Africa- the rainbow nation, but, there will be more than one group of people that can relate and would love to buy the product. Am I the only who noticed they used very ordinary people (the ones that actually make companies richer….the real day-to-day consumers) for this ad?

2.c. This is a company that has marketing manager who probably understanding chemicals really well!

Quick brainstorm- The chemical layer of the skin is the dermis. EVERY HUMAN HAS A DERMIS LAYER, so whatever lotion or product it is, anyone can see the chemical reaction of what the product is suppose to do. Now, here is where the problem comes in with consumers- If a consumer only sees, e.g the beautiful singer Adele as the ONLY person in the picture, but the product could work for so many other people, then unfortunately, your advert was not so successful. I repeat, not all consumers understand how hair or body lotion results work, people go for what they can relate to!

2.d. I am sure some of you are going, “wait, they must spend a fortune if the ad has to include so many different people for one product?”

Ok, so this is where the topic at hand comes in and this is what I have to say:

Who forced the company to include any models for that matter? As far as the consumer is concerned the models hair STRAND is the important part not her face, skin or so called “race”, how many USA hair ads have I come across that only include different curl patterns? I am talking, well known natural hair products in the YouTube hair communities. Some companies just use animated hair strands or cartoon pics or few human hair strands of different pattern. Who knows? all the  different type of strands could be weaves!!! But at least consumers feel included and want to run to the stores and grab every bottle!

Of course, every company is different, but it doesn’t mean you should not do your research before making an ad!

LAst worDS:

I was reading this article through my phone written by my girl, Aisha and all I could do was SHAKE MY HEAD…. an example of one sided adverts…

We need a change….people who actually care about consumers and what attracts them….need to be the one working on the adverts…

check out the post HERE

We cannot all relate to everyone’s hair BUT there is something this DR miracle Thingy is forgetting, TARGET YOUR MARKET WELL, most people from the southern part of Africa have type 4 hair…so if you gonna bring products and use type 3 a and 2a hair, some consumers don’t feel “welcomed”… same applies with adverts on TV and having a “White or Indian”  celeb advertising the product….why would a black person think they can even TRY the product… even MOST so called “coloreds” in southern Africa don’t have type 3a or 2a (very loose curl pattern)…this is not a product issue, this is a MARKETING ISSUE, I feel like they just DUMPED the product in South Africa without enough Marketing Research. They could have added “a few different hair types in the Magazine”…..if body/ firming lotions adverts can can do it, why cant hair products do that in magzzz?….. it’s annoying…

I’m out….

Peace!! ‘n Happy fRo-CurL groWing :D

Feedback: Africa International Hair Extravaganza

On the 11 of August 2012 (Saturday), was the AIHE…. I was extremely excited and got there 30 minutes after the actual opening time. The first thing I went searching for was shea butter LOL and all I saw was the boring hair brands (NO OFFENSE) that I never really cared for even when I had relaxed hair.

I felt like a victim of day light robbery. So much money for “small brands” hair products I can buy at the petrol station kiosk or pick n pay….HAIIIBO!!! How dare they mess with my mind like that!

To be straight forward with honesty? IT WAS A WEAVE SHOW…..call it AFRICA CRAZE OF 100 % HUMAN HAIR EXTRAVAGANZA……..(SHAKING MY HEAD). I was totally embarrassed by the lack of appreciation we have for OUR OWN HAIR STRANDS… Even the ladies who represented the “afro” were wearing wigs of some sort. It is as if no effort was put into this-seriously- how much would it cost to get ladies with natural hair and just blow out their hair into huge puffs!!!?

This was a quick money making scheme! I am seriously disappointed :(

I only got dreadlocks product samples from JABU STONE, catalogs for weave, Perfect Chioce and Soft n Free  moisturizing oil—–don’t we all know these things in our stores? Don’t they know I came to the show for the “International” trading for “AFRICA” goodies? I had such high hopes, my mom thought she would get her Dark n Lovely products on a nice bargain price. When I heard her say “I don’t do those cheapie brands, they broke my hair in past, I want to go home”…… YOOOOO!!!!!!! I didn’t know she also knew the difference LOL. I tried to make her feel better by telling her that most products do improve on their hair  product ingredients to better our hair, ummm she obviously didn’t buy that! She sat down the entire 8 hours we were there :( I felt really bad.

So the following Monday I bought her all her favorite products from Soft Sheen Carson(D n L and Optimum), and she had to top it up by reminding me, “so why did you even go to that hair stuff, if you know you could buy it at Shoprite? ” (LOL) I don’t  know why she had to remind me, I quickly changed the subject.

Well, lets get back to my excitement that ended quickly and sadly; I quickly realise that there was nothing sold for natural hair, so I just browsed through products, filmed a few parts of the shows and sat down.

MY LAST CRIES: I didn’t find any Shea Butter (MY MAIN REASON FOR GOING) and I was even hoping for hair accessories. Some hair accessories that I see on youtube with some of the US Youtubers is not really found in shops here, so I was hoping I would get a bit of those goodies at this “extravaganza” …..sigh

Luckily, I found my home girl Tendayi who felt my pain (LOL) and she, too, wrote an article about this event.

It is a must-read :http://africanhairblog.com/2012/08/14/africa-international-hair-extravaganza/

and I also met some lovely naturals, who are definitely hooking me up for my shea butter :D I was so excited, well they definitely made my journey worth it :D

Shout out to Eloise, Tendayi, Busisiwe, Karabo, Christine, Eno, Emanu, Carice and Kalliopi :D You ladies really made my night just perfect and my journey worth it :)

Thanks so much for reading :D

Book Review: Curly Like Me

Hi lovelies!!!!

I am so sorry for my silence :D but I am still around and kicking LOL

So as you can see the title; I really wanted to share my point of view of this book.

Firstly let me start by saying that, in the year 2010,  when I made the decision to go natural and start researching about natural hair, this was the very first site I came across (second site was naturallycurly.com) but it was called “biracial hair” or something along those lines. I did not pay attention to the site because I immediately assumed that it would not work for my hair because I couldn’t possibly relate to someone with “looser curl pattern” (one of my big illusion/myth that held me back from going natural). After trying so many methods found on blog, vlogs and forums, THIS IS THE ONE FOR ME :D :D see? you will never know until you try it for yourself :D

SIDENOTE: I purchased the book at amazon.com but if you are in south africa you can buy at Loot.co.za (I didnt even know this book site sells natural hair books, while surfing their site I realise they sell all of them :D )

So a brief quick opinion on my view on this book (before the long details); I think it is an amazing book, I loved reading it, it was really informative, a great book for those who are also stuck in “myth or tales” and aren’t sure what is the truth on certain ingredients. Overall, I really enjoyed the book; I could definitely relate to her childhood hair as I also remember have “manageable hair” only when my mother was around and smacked my scalp with some awesome relaxer :D LOL and i was brand new again. I could also relate to holidays at my paternal family and they have wavy hair (some even close to bone straight) and they had no idea what I had on my head or how to manage it (I had lots of breakage on holidays to my father’s family :( ). All the ups and downs of college hair(away from my mom). The book gave a brief physiological look and the chemistry behind our curls; why it has its characteristics and all that comes with it. It had a baby section too (oooaaawh :) ) so sweet, I could even relate to the baby’s kinks :D that was definitely my kinky hair :D

There were amazing hair styles, useful tips on how to style, trim, night routine, hair treatments, dying hair, tips on combing, shampooing and conditioning.

definitely a handy book :D

Here is the important part of the book – The Tightly Curly Method

- based on Leaving a NORMAL/REGULAR conditioner in the hair and slowly seperating most of the “grouped” hairs. This is extremely clever!!!! My tight curls love this method(I will be doing a YT video to demonstrate the method and I will link the video below once it is up :D ) This method weighs down the hair and makes the curls define even more than it would with a leave-in conditioner.

Quick step:

- Shampoo scalp

- Condition

- Detangle/Comb/brushing

- Define your Curls

-”Doodles” (optional)

My Conclusion: Although the book didn’t have much focus on how to maintain shorter hair, I really loved this method on my hair, it may seem time consuming but this is definitely my way to let my hair be in its natural state :) without any fuss. I really love it!

Sneak Preview :)

This is my hair when wet (with my regular conditioner)

This my Hair FINALLY DRY :D :D MY HAIR LOVES THIS METHOD :D
