Tightly Curly Method Week 5: 27 Jan 2013 – 2 February 2013

Hey Ladies!!!!

Well, week 5, was pretty smooth, I didn’t struggle for detangling

and as you can see; my hair was still wet with “night 1″ on Sunday, I did my hair really late and I had to use my hooded set dryer; I hit the sack straight after that.

Maintainance: I barely mention this but for maintaining my hair i use conditioner and water only. most of my conditioner have plenty of oils already so my hair turns out shiny and healthy.

The front was not looking good at all; I decided to band it in the front so that it looks slick and new :)

Feedback: I had fun doing the Basics TC method, as from week 6, it is time to spice it up with “styling”/protective-styling.

lesson learnt: I cannot do my hair at night any longer, it makes me impatient, sleepy and confused (LOL).

If you have read the book, then you know that there is a section specifically on styling and the next 7 weeks will be dedicated to styling my “short” and “awkward length” hair and i can’t wait :)

Have you styled your hair with the TC method yet?

Tightly Curly Method Week 4: 20 Jan 2013 – 26 Jan 2013

Hi lovelies

This past week was really hectic for me.

I did my hair in the evening around 5 pm, I had so many things to do that my superficial needs had to come last (LOL)

Having said that, I couldn’t take good clear photos when my hair dried hence it was just so late and I didn’t have good lighting; because I fiddle with the settings of my camera lighting, I ended up with bad pictures quality for about two days (smh), so sorry about that, especially on day 3, I couldn’t take good pics, the settings were just horrible for my day time and the picture ended up looking like night time, shows you how good I am with camera and technology in general :)

This has been the easiest week by far, throughout this TC challenge. My hair was super quick to detangle and very easy to coil.My curl pattern seems to be changing(It has been 2 weeks that i am observing this); I have not used any heat in so many months but it seems to be getting looser as it grows from the roots, so maybe it is just my hair doing its own weird thing.

Feedback: As I am typing this article, I have not done my 5th week TC method, I got visitors. I will make sure I use my hooded head set dryer before I hit the sack, i did not do that last week and it was just horrible to sleep with hair!

This is what my hair looks like right now….and hopefully I get my hair sorted in the evening.

Ill be out for now and we will chat later :D

Happy Hair Journey ya’ll :)

Cholesterol 101

I got plenty of direct messages from twitter ever since I mentioned my cholesterol love and I promised to just write an article instead, so here you go :)

Let’s get to the point about this, yeah?

First, let us clear the confusion between protein and cholesterol; the major difference between the two:

Protein is for hair strength, especially when your hair feels weak and breaks a lot due to moisture overload, heat damage, and too much hair manipulation.  Cholesterol is for elasticity(bouncy, fluffy), hair porosity (how dry your hair is), meaning to put moisture back to your hair and give really good slip on to the hair unlike protein that can sometimes feel too stiff and needs you to re-enforce moisture to your hair.

So from now on, never get confused, yeah?

Quick similarities between cholesterol and protein:

Makes your hair shiny, strong, and thick. These are the reason people keep getting confused with the two treatments.

Is it OK to use both? Is it OK to have a 2in1 treatment conditioner of Protein and Cholesterol?

YES!!!! Having best of both world is not a bad thing, however, it will not guarantee that your hair strength(from the protein) is to the max that it should have gained from the treatment, and same applies to the cholesterol effect.

Can your hair benefit from eating foods that contain cholesterol?

Not at all. It will only cause heart failure; coronary heart disease will definitely be one of the first heart problems you will have. Rather opt for external hair treats :)

The quickest cholesterol hair treat is a hot oil treatment.

Quick Tip:

1. Apply oil all over damp hair

2. Cover with shower cap or clean plastic

3. Use your blow dryer on low heat to creative effective heat over the plastic cap.

*****if you are not in a hurry, just leave the cap on for 45 minutes to 1 hour and you will still have the same result!

Can you make homemade cholesterol treatments?

yes, depending on the ingredients you want to use, and also depends on what gives you “moisture back into your hair”. It could be oil? with a slice of avocado.

On the other hand, I make my own synthetic (not organic) cholesterol and I do not use kitchen ingredients I use industrial ingredients and my hair turns out just as good.

There are so many brands that sell cholesterol treatments, so all you have to do is search for the one that works for you.

Here are some of my ingredients I use (just to name a few):

propylene glycol, cetyl alcohol, vegetable glycerine, hydrolised collgen,quatemium-22, aloe vera, sheabutter, jojoba oil and dimethicone. methylisothiazolinone

Is Cholesterol that important?

To me, yes it is, although it differs from person to person, others may find protein more important that could be; this could be  because their hair is weaker without the protein treatment.

Think about it, how many of us exclude oils from our regimen?

So, to me, re-enforcing intense moisture is a must for me.

Do you give you hair a cholesterol treat?

Happy Hair journey ^_^!!!!

Tightly Curly Method Challenge_ WEEK 1 (29th Dec 2012 – 5th Jan 2013)

So I decided to show some pic’s and update you on how far I am with the challenge:

I did a couple of crazy things to my hair before calming down into TC-method

I first started off with a Cholesterol treatment; my hair felt stronger and thick, and I was ready for the challenge :D

First Day Hair…

super defined, no tangles….. no complain at the time (LOL)

This is all the pictures of the first week :D (from the 29/12/12)

All week, I used ELVIVE L’oréal,

It gave me shine and no flaking :)

First week, no complaints :)
My ends were sealed with conditioner most of the time.
However, I am trying to style my hair in this shrinkage stage
I look ridiculous most of the time but I can cope :) :)
Following detangling day (week 2) it was very easy to do because i didn’t have any tangling issues.
Happy and safe hair journey :D

Natural Hair Update: Simple Flat twists (protective styling)

HI subbies :D

I am slowly trying to go into protective styling again, with really low maintenance.

I co-washed my hair then blow dried using cold/cool setting.

I used almond oil only and during the week I used styling lotion or green tea to keep my hair moisturized.

I hope you enjoy the video :)

Ad’s in S.A on fro’s and curlies!!! (We Need a SeriouS Change)

Advertisement, as we all know by now, is about the client; who will the products  attract!? The only way to be sure of who you are calling towards your goodies, is BY THOROUGH RESEARCH.

Mind you, this is about natural hair products. There are 2 very important point I would like to outline before going any further.

1. There is a huge economic recession at the moment, but it doesnt mean that GOOGLING costs alot- just to have a look at your “natural hair client” of that specific country.

In fact, the BEAUTY INDUSTRY, is one industry that cannot complain about recession; we all know that we have to look great for that job interview. As you reading this article, there is a house wife somewhere in the world getting her hair permed or relaxed, her nails done, buying a new lotion or deodorant or even breast implants . So I have no sympathy for bad advertisement  especially when it doesn’t look like enough work was applied.

In few words of perfect summary- MONEY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS.

If you willing to give a one-sided advert in a mag (that’s a lot of money wasted by the way) then you have enough money to Google your clients’ hair type and make them feel a little special in your adverts.

2. If you have read my article called “chemicals knows no race” then this last point should very straight-forward analysis for you.

A consumer does not really know the “behind-the-scene truth” of beauty chemicals because all they want is an advert is appealing to them and the product that quickly consults them(the writing on the containers). They do not know anything further!

With this point, I want to give you a very simple Ad I downloaded from Google images. This is a dove lotion ad (tv and mag’s)

Take a good look at the following images, what do you see?

Let me tell you what I see:

2.a. This company wants the return of EVERY PENNY that they’ve put in this ad, and I am very sure they are enjoying their hardwork that they have put in this advert.

2.b. These are not the only skin tone in the world not to mention in South Africa- the rainbow nation, but, there will be more than one group of people that can relate and would love to buy the product. Am I the only who noticed they used very ordinary people (the ones that actually make companies richer….the real day-to-day consumers) for this ad?

2.c. This is a company that has marketing manager who probably understanding chemicals really well!

Quick brainstorm- The chemical layer of the skin is the dermis. EVERY HUMAN HAS A DERMIS LAYER, so whatever lotion or product it is, anyone can see the chemical reaction of what the product is suppose to do. Now, here is where the problem comes in with consumers- If a consumer only sees, e.g the beautiful singer Adele as the ONLY person in the picture, but the product could work for so many other people, then unfortunately, your advert was not so successful. I repeat, not all consumers understand how hair or body lotion results work, people go for what they can relate to!

2.d. I am sure some of you are going, “wait, they must spend a fortune if the ad has to include so many different people for one product?”

Ok, so this is where the topic at hand comes in and this is what I have to say:

Who forced the company to include any models for that matter? As far as the consumer is concerned the models hair STRAND is the important part not her face, skin or so called “race”, how many USA hair ads have I come across that only include different curl patterns? I am talking, well known natural hair products in the YouTube hair communities. Some companies just use animated hair strands or cartoon pics or few human hair strands of different pattern. Who knows? all the  different type of strands could be weaves!!! But at least consumers feel included and want to run to the stores and grab every bottle!

Of course, every company is different, but it doesn’t mean you should not do your research before making an ad!

LAst worDS:

I was reading this article through my phone written by my girl, Aisha and all I could do was SHAKE MY HEAD…. an example of one sided adverts…

We need a change….people who actually care about consumers and what attracts them….need to be the one working on the adverts…

check out the post HERE

We cannot all relate to everyone’s hair BUT there is something this DR miracle Thingy is forgetting, TARGET YOUR MARKET WELL, most people from the southern part of Africa have type 4 hair…so if you gonna bring products and use type 3 a and 2a hair, some consumers don’t feel “welcomed”… same applies with adverts on TV and having a “White or Indian”  celeb advertising the product….why would a black person think they can even TRY the product… even MOST so called “coloreds” in southern Africa don’t have type 3a or 2a (very loose curl pattern)…this is not a product issue, this is a MARKETING ISSUE, I feel like they just DUMPED the product in South Africa without enough Marketing Research. They could have added “a few different hair types in the Magazine”…..if body/ firming lotions adverts can can do it, why cant hair products do that in magzzz?….. it’s annoying…

I’m out….

Peace!! ‘n Happy fRo-CurL groWing :D

What is your Hair Goal?

1. Thick Hair Strands

This has been one part of my relaxed hair journey that was not improved or achieved. I am so happy that this was not a struggle to achieve since I’ve been natural.

2. Puff and Afros
I have always had a crush on this type of hair style and being able to finally do that is like a dream come true LOL

3. Embracing my kinky coils
This sounds so easy to do, but it really isn’t. Sometimes certain hairstyles one can achieve does not mean you can achieve it too, or at least not for now, due to your hair characteristics. you have to find an effortless style without always trying to “stretch your natural hair”, it is almost as if you need to accept your as is and keeping in mind your work environment, your lifestyle and everything else that comes with it.
